Photogravure

The Noble Printing Technique Photogravure

The noble printing technique photogravure is a method of transferring a photograph with all levels between black and white by etching onto a copper plate and printing it on paper. The different tonal gradations result from tiny irregular craters in the plate, which differ in depth and extent. The printed image on the paper is not formed by dots of different sizes (screens) simulating a halftone image, but by variations in the amount of ink in the etched areas of the copper plate.
